My 2023 trip to the US (Part 4 – The food)

** warning: this post is long and may cause hunger **

Here’s most of the places I ate at during my trip. I’ve excluded the places I went to during my girls trip as I’ve already mentioned them in my earlier post.

Jason’s Deli (Lawrence, KS)

Went to Jason’s Deli a few times while I was there. Love their beefeater sandwich and their chicken pot pie soup.

Q39 (Overland Park, KS)

You can’t go to Kansas and not have barbeque! Q39 is one of our faves. We ordered onion straws to share and I had the Pit Master Brisket Sandwich. The brisket just melts in your mouth!!!

Sylas & Maddy (Lawrence, KS)

This is my favourite ice creamery in Lawrence. They have some very interesting flavours too but you won’t know what’s available until you get to the store itself. My fave combo is a scoop each of Snickers and Gold Dust.

Five Guys (Kansas City, KS)

Burgers and hotdogs. We usually have lunch here whenever we go to the Legends outlet mall in Kansas City. It’s our go to fuel up place before and during shopping hahaha.

Strouds (Overland Park, KS)

Wherever I’m in the use I have to get chicken fried steak and that’s only because there is no decent chicken fried steak where I live. Sure I could make it myself but why make when I can get someone to make it for me hahaha. The chicken fried steak at Stroud’s is really good and the portions are pretty decent.

Hong Kong Star Chinese Restaurant (Olathe, KS)

Being half Chinese and living in Asia, having Chinese food overseas is usually a hit or miss. My bestie and her family love the food from this place. I have to admit some of the dishes were tasty but I found the fried rice that I ordered a little on the salty side. We ordered quite a bit of food considering there was only 4 of us and 2 of us are small eaters but then we were planning on bringing the leftovers so that Bestie’s eldest could have some when we got home.

McAlister’s Deli (Lawrence, KS)

Another deli place I tend to frequent whenever I’m in Lawrence. I usually get the French Dip sandwich but this time I opted to have their Black Angus Roast Beef spud with a side of broccoli cheddar soup. Both were delicious but oh so filling. I wasn’t able to finish all my spud because that thing was huge.

Tous Les Jours (Lawrence, KS)

A Korean French bakery. I am a sucker for baked goods especially cakes, breads and buns. I got 4 different kinds of pastries/buns. I got a custard bun, a Croque Monsieur (French ham and cheese sandwich), a twist donut and a bulgogi hot dog bun. The bulgogi hot dog bun was definitely something new to me but it was delicious.

Panera Bread (Kansas City, KS)

We wanted something light for lunch while we were back at the outlet mall, so we ended up at Panera Bread. I had half of a grilled cheese sandwich and a cup of French onion soup. I know people usually have tomato soup with grilled cheese, but I was craving French onion soup. To be honest it wasn’t a bad combo. I think grilled cheese sandwiches go well with most soups especially the non-creamy variety.

Johnny’s Tavern (Lawrence, KS)

My bestie’s go to place for pizza. They do a thin crust pizza which is actually my preferred type of pizza crust. Sorry no photos of the pizza as the kids kind of “attacked” it before I got a chance to take a picture lol, so all I managed to get was pic of the box.

Joe’s Bar-B-Que (Olathe, KS)

Another famous Kansas barbeque place. This place is set up of kind of like how my high school cafeteria was. You go up to the counter, place your order and pay and move down the line to collect you food. I ordered the Z-Man Sandwich which is slow-smoked beef brisket with smoked provolone cheese topped with two crispy onion rings all on a toasted kaiser roll. You can go wrong with beef and cheese in a sandwich especially if the beef is brisket that melts in your mouth.

Smallcakes (Lawrence, KS)

As mentioned above, I love baked goods so when I saw this cupcake store near the supermarket we were going to, I had to check them out. Their cupcakes were so pretty and I could choose just one so I ended up picking 4 hahaha. I got Birthday Cake (vanilla cake topped with buttercream frosting and sprinkles – for the kid in me), Peanut Butter Cup (chocolate cake frosted with peanut butter cream cheese, topped with peanut butter cups), Cookies-N-Cream (chocolate cake with cookie buttercream topped with chocolate cookie crumbles) and Chocolate Caramel Crunch (chocolate cake with caramel frosting). The cupcakes were just the lightest cakes I’ve ever had and the buttercreams were not too heavy either.

Texas Roadhouse (Lawrence, KS)

For my last night in Lawrence, we headed to this steakhouse. I wasn’t super hungry to instead of steak, I ordered the beef tips with mash potatoes. The beef tips came with a sauteed mushrooms and onion brown gravy.
